2. Conference: "The Gwalior Qur’an Manuscript: The Polysemy of an Illu-minated Codex", Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Site Richelieu), Paris, 14–15 June, 2012

This two-day conference analyses the Gwalior Qur'an Manuscript, copied in 1399 in Delhi, and now housed in the Aga Khan Collection. The conference is the concluding point of four years of research and brings together, for the first time, all the participants in this project. They are recognised specialists in the areas of art history, history, codicology, paleography, Islamic studies, divination and magic.

4. Conference: “Biographies of Religious Engagement –  Islamic Activism in Psychological Perspective”, University of Cape Town, 10-12 October 2012

This is a conference dedicated to study the life histories of religious activists from the perspective of the psychology of religion. It will focus attention on Islamic activists involved in some or the other form of religious activism since the 1970s. Papers will examine personal trajectories over a long period of time, focusing on initial participation through to their present positions. For the purpose of this conference, Islamists will denote individuals who have come together to (re)establish Islam on a social or political level.

5. Lecturer in Philosophy Ref 647, School of History, Art History & Philosophy, University of Sussex

As part of a significant investment in the study of the Middle East, the University of Sussex wishes to appoint a promising scholar to a Lectureship in Philosophy (permanent, full time). The precise area of specialization is open.

The individual we seek will possess a profile of high quality published work; clear plans for future research; demonstrable excellence as a teacher; and an entrepreneurial attitude to generating research grant income.

Salary range:  Lecturer A – starting at £32,901 and rising to £35,938 per an-num; Lecturer B – starting at £37,012 and rising to £44,166 per annum. Closing date for applications: 22 June 2012. Expected start date: 1 September 2012 (or a later date by agreement)

6. British Library Acquisitions South Team Member: Asian languages (Arabic), London

Vacancy for a person to order and process material for the Asian and African Studies collections in Arabic and Middle Eastern languages. For this post, excellent knowledge of written Arabic and the ability to transliterate it accurately into Latin letters is essential. Knowledge of Hebrew and/or Persian and the ability to transliterate from these languages would be advantageous, as would familiarity with Arabic literature and/or computer cataloguing systems. The postholder will process monographs and serials in printed, microform and electronic formats using the Library's acquisition and cataloguing system.

This is a permanent, full-time role working 36:00 hours per week. It is based in London at the British Library's St Pancras site. The salary will be £20,238 per annum.

This special issue seeks to take up tensions in conflicting stories about and different perspectives on Europe’s history and identity that present Europe without Muslims or contrastingly portray Muslims as part of Europe’s past and present : “what role Islam and Muslims have played and still play in the imagining of what Europe means”. 8. Collection d'ouvrages : Sources de l'Histoire maritime

Le Centre de recherche en histoire maritime et littorale (CRHAEL) de l'Université du Littoral (ULCO) lance une nouvelle collection d'ouvrages consacrée aux sources de l'histoire maritime et à leur exploitation, princi-palement aux époques moderne et contemporaine (de façon non exclusive).

Chaque ouvrage réunira une dizaine de contributions éclairant les fonds documentaires, l'originalité de la source et son apport pour les historiens. Chaque contributeur produira donc une présentation accompagnant la transcription ou la reproduction d'un document original. Thèmes des premiers volumes : les journaux de bord ; les contrats d'engagement ; les documents liés à l'assurance maritime (contrats, polices d'assurances, rapports d'avaries) ; les actes de sociétés commerciales.

9. Call for Papers: “New Wave Iranian Cinema”, Persian Film Festival and Sydney Society for Literature and Aesthetics, Iranian New Wave Cinema

The Persian International Film Festival (http://www.persianfilmfestival.com) and the Sydney Society for Literature and Aesthetics are proud to announce a call out for articles for a special edition of the Journal for the Sydney Society for Literature and Aesthetics on Iranian New Wave Cinema. Guest editors are Dr. Omid Tofighian and festival co-director Sanaz Fotouhi.

The editors will accept articles and reviews that cover a diverse range of topics on Iranian cinema, from various disciplines and using different approaches and styles. Themes and topics that may be addressed include: film history; cinema style and structure; the cinema industry in Iran; state censorship, self-censorship and control of distribution; film language; philosophy of cinema; cinema as social, cultural or political critique; humanistic and apolitical film; cinema as historical documentation; reality and documentary; exporting films – foreign perception, international awareness and propaganda; risks and opportunities in Iran; literary adaptations; allegory in Iranian cinema. We will also consider papers and reviews on Iranian cinema in diaspora, which address topics such as migration and settlement.
