CONFERENCES

1. International Workshop on “Transnational Advocacy Networks of Muslim Women: Organisation, Objectives and Countermovements in the National and Transnational Arena”, University Marburg, 20 July 2012

The workshop is connected to a research project that addresses the emergence and expansion of transnational advocacy networks of Muslim women. Taking Musawah for Equaltiy in the Family, a transnational network of Muslim women, as a case in point, the workshop discusses the dynamic of movement and countermovement formation on the transnational level. It is expected to enhance the social movement studies which have until now paid only little attention to the constellation of original movements and countermovements at the transnational level. Musawah’s networking activity is oriented towards reforms of Islamic/Muslim family laws.

Organisers: Claudia Derichs and Dana Fennert, Institute of Political Science, University Marburg. Participants: Moha Ennaji, Simin Fadaee, Shaista Gohir, Frederik Holst, Fatima Sadiqi, Saskia Schäfer and Susanne Schröter. 6. Workshop: "Orders and Itineraries: Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian Networks in Southern Asia, c. 900-1900",  21 - 22 Feb 2013, Singapore

The presence and importance of orders, as corporate structures of ritual and interpretive religious specialists, has long been noted in the history of South and Southeast Asia. Most often, however, these discussions have been compartmentalized within fields of study focused on a single religious tradition. This workshop seeks to open new lines of conversation by bringing together scholars working on Buddhist monastic lineages, Sufi tariqas, and Christian orders in Southern Asia, to bring their own specialized research into conversation with recent developments in the broader field of trans-regional history. The workshop seeks to understand better the motivations for extending religious communities geographically in the southern Asian region, as well as conceptions of affiliation that have shaped the movement and localization of religious specialists. The workshop will also explore the ways in which the presence of religious orders shaped processes of recognition and competition within and across the expansionary religious traditions of Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity.

Deadline for Paper proposals: 15 July 2012. Information www.ari.nus.edu.sg/events_categorydetails.asp?categoryid=6&eventid=1312

8. Up to 14 Visiting Research Fellowships at ZMO (Zentrum Moderner Orient) & BGSMCS (Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures & Societies)

Joint call for applications for Visiting Research Fellowships 2013 ZMO and BGSMCS are inviting applications for the calendar year of 2013. We are interested in attracting outstanding researchers who are engaged in research projects that are relevant to the respective research profiles at ZMO (www.zmo.de) and BGSMCS (www.bgsmcs.fu-berlin.de).

ZMO is an interdisciplinary research institute with an international community of researchers pursuing research with regional and trans-regional focus on societies in Africa, the Middle East, and South-, South-East and Central Asia and their interrelations (as well as their relations to Europe). The current main research program, “Muslim worlds: world of Islam? Conceptions, practices and crises of the global”, is concerned with social and historical dimensions of the Muslim world. We will, however, also consider excellent applications with a different focus. All applications should address themes covered by the three main working groups, “Concepts of World and Order”, “Microcosms and Practices of the Local” and “Actors in Translocal Spaces”, or themes that other ZMO-based working groups are engaged with (see website). BGSMCS is an interdisciplinary Graduate School based at Freie Universität Berlin. The Graduate School has an international body of students and draws from a range of experienced researchers based in various institutions in Berlin who act as principle investigators and supervisors. The BGSMCS investigates the plurality, changeability, and global connectedness of Muslim cultures and societies. The area of study includes Muslim societies in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, as well as Muslim communities in Europe and North America. We specially invite applications in the following fields: education; communication, mediality, and media studies; Islam and Muslims in the West.

Slots are available throughout the year, and as we will allocate fellowships throughout all the months of the year. We particularly encourage applications by candidates from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
